General Summary
The Deputy General Counsel works with the General Counsel to provide legal advice to House leadership on a variety of matters. The Deputy General Counsel also works with the General Counsel to provide ethics advice to members of the House, and to oversee the House’s responses to public records requests.
Examples of Work Performed
- Assist with legal research and analysis in evaluating proposed and potential legislation.
- Assist with responses to subpoenas, including drafting motions to quash.
- Assist with drafting amicus and other briefs to defend legislation against constitutional challenges.
- Supervise the House’s responses to public records requests to ensure compliance with public records laws.
- Respond to ethics inquiries from members of the House, including occasional drafting of formal ethics opinions under the General Counsel’s supervision.
- Assist with providing advice on employment law matters.
- Assist with substantive review of House contracts prior to execution.
- Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of federal and state constitutional law
- Knowledge of Florida statutory law and civil procedure

- Ability to foresee potential legal challenges and to propose appropriate solutions
- Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, verbally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications
Attorney in good standing with The Florida Bar
At least two years of experience in the practice of law
Salary
Salary commensurate with experience
