This position requires up to 10% travel.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s mission is to manage fish and wildlife resources for their long-term well-being and the benefit of people. The commission has the authority to exercise the executive and regulatory powers over wildlife, fresh water aquatic life, and marine life through Article IV, Section 9 of the Florida Constitution, as well as statutory authorities for statewide law enforcement, boating and waterways, and invasive plant management. The Legal Office provides a wide range of legal services to the Commission and its staff. Services include but are not limited to representing FWC in litigation, providing general legal counsel to FWC, preparing legal opinions, developing and reviewing contracts, legislation, rules, and other legal instruments.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION
Graduation from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school by at least Spring 2023; and Active member of the Florida Bar or registered for the summer Florida Bar Exam. If not a current member of the Florida Bar, must pass the Florida Bar and become an active member within one year of hire date.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Commission’s standard of conduct, as well as any and all Commission rules, directives, policies, and/or procedures.
The employee in this position is responsible for performing the following legal activities for the Commission:
- Performs research for legal interpretations, briefs, real estate transactions, pleadings, court hearings, trials, and related legal matters.
- Consults with and advises Commission staff on matters relating to the legal requirements for program development, implementation, strategic planning, and internal management activities.
- Participates in development, negotiations, and review related to procurement, contracts, and other agreements.
- In coordination with the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, provides litigation support to Commission’s litigation attorney(s) and may be called upon to represent the Commission and staff before various judicial and administrative bodies, engaging in various forms of litigation. In addition, this position will be called upon to respond to public, law enforcement, and judicial inquiries pertaining to the Commission’s powers and duties.
- Assists with Advising and working with one or more of the various Divisions and Offices in the area of program development, identification, and analysis of the legal ramifications of programs and activities undertaken by the subject Division or Office.
- Assists with public records and discovery requests.
- Occasionally, receives legislative bill drafting, reviewing, commenting, and tracking assignments.
- Participates in development and promulgation of Commission rules through assuring legal and technical requirements of rulemaking are met.
- Performs various additional administrative and legal duties as needed and will advise and represent staff members as appropriate.

Work at FWC is cross-functional meaning duties may cross division/office lines. The Commission expects employees to function across FWC’s organizational structure by providing their skills and expertise wherever needed through work on teams or as directed.
Responsible for following the provisions and requirements in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, related to the Department of Financial Services rules and FWC’s invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures.
