The Asia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide media, social media, advocacy, research and administrative assistance to the Tokyo office. This is a part-time position (24 hours per week) and the flexibility to work on time-sensitive products is highly desirable. This position reports to the Japan Director based in Tokyo.
The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely but will be expected to work from the office or attend in-person meetings when needed. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment and onboarding of this position.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage Japanese translation of Human Rights Watch’s press releases and other products, including coordinating with external translators, vetting of translations, coding them to Japanese website, and e-mailing them out to various contacts in Japan;
2. Manage SNS of the Tokyo office, including by composing and posting messages on Tokyo office’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, in liaison with the web team of Human Rights Watch;
3. Provide advocacy support to the Tokyo advocacy team, including making meeting requests, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, and liaising with partner organizations and other stakeholders to advance the team’s advocacy efforts;
4. Provide administrative support to the Japan Director, including scheduling, recording and processing finances, and maintaining accurate file-keeping;
5. Maintain and develop the Salesforce database (stakeholder management system) by updating Japan stakeholder (mainly media and advocacy contacts) records and information;
6. Assist with mentoring of interns;
7. Provide support for occasional local, national and international advocacy campaigns;
8. Engage in occasional local, national and international research and writings; and
9. Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in business administration, communications, social science, or a related field is required.
Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required, prior administrative office experience is highly desirable.
2. Strong oral and written communications skills in English and Japanese are required.
3. Solid computer skills in Microsoft Office are required.
4. Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail are required.
5. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff within the organization are required.
6. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
7. Strong interest in human rights is desirable.
Other: Candidates must possess valid work authorization for Japan; HRW is unable to sponsor work permits for this role.While this position is part-time, theflexibility to work on Japanese translation of press releases in a timely manner is highly desirable as these products are time sensitive.
