Agency Overview: The Safe Center LI, Inc. (TSCLI) is the leading provider of services to victims of interpersonal violence in Nassau County. The agency provides comprehensive services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, human trafficking, and elder abuse. Summary: The Backup Hospital Advocate (BUHA) provides backup support to the Survivor Advocate for Emergency Response (SAFER) program by being on-call during scheduled shifts to provide emotional support, information, advocacy, and referrals to adult and child victims of rape/sexual assault, child sexual abuse, domestic/intimate partner violence, and human trafficking who present to an emergency room within Nassau County. BUHAs empower and equip victims with information, support, and resources to meet their needs and support healing in the immediate aftermath of abuse. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Advocacy Services.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complete 30 hours of initial training and 10 hours of ongoing training annually to meet the qualifications of a Rape Crisis Counselor (RCC) as approved by the Nassau County Department of Health
- Provide emotional support and accompanimentto adult and child victims of interpersonal violence who are receiving emergency medical care in the immediate aftermath of abuse, including accompaniment to sexual assault and other medical exams and support during interviews with investigative partners
- Provide victims with information about the criminal justice process, medical services, victims’ rights, victim compensation, and available services/resources
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary partners, including medical personnel, law enforcement, and child protective services to provide advocacy to victims during their emergency room visit
- Assess victims’ risks and needs to establish appropriate safety planning and meet their immediate needs upon hospital discharge, including arranging safe housing, transportation, and other concrete resources, like clothing and food
- Facilitate linkages to ongoing supportive services through The Safe Center, such as victim advocacy, case management, counseling, legal services, and housing assistance
- Complete and submit hospital response reports, victim compensation applications, and other case-related paperwork within 24 hours of victim contact
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director and/or Executive Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a resident of Nassau County
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, or related field is preferred but not required
- Experience responding to and supporting individuals and families in crisis, knowledge of the dynamics of interpersonal violence is preferred
- Spoken and written fluency in Spanish or other languages is highly desired
- One must be able to utilize the following technology: computer, fax machine, copy machine, Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and SharePoint), and Zoom
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- BUHAs are mandated reporters in cases of child abuse and neglect
- During their scheduled shifts, BUHAs must arrive at the hospital within 45 minutes of being requested
- BUHAs are responsible for securing coverage for any shifts they cannot work
- If a BUHA cannot fulfill their shift obligation when requested at the hospital, their shift pay is forfeited and will result in further disciplinary action, up to and including termination
- BUHAs must participate in staff meetings and individual supervision on at least a quarterly basis
HOURS, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- Position requires the use of a car and a flexible schedule
- Per-diem, non-exempt
- Shifts available 5PM-9AM on Monday-Friday and 9AM-9PM/9PM-9AM on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
- Eligible to accrue paid time off when working more than 20 hours per week
- Salary: $25 per shift (double time for holidays) plus $16.40 hourly rate when actively responding to cases, receiving job-related training, and attending agency meetings
