Public Defender's Office - 17th Judicial Circuit

The Office is interested in an Early Representation Unit attorney. The Early Representation Unit provides legal representation for newly arrested defendants in the First Appearance Court 365 days a year. Our dedicated Early Representation attorneys handle unfiled criminal cases until the State of Florida makes a filing decision on the case.
Summary of Duties: Providing legal representation in the First Appearance Court, investigating the allegations made by law enforcement, litigating bond motions before the court, conducting legal research, and engaging with the State of Florida’s criminal case filing attorneys. The attorney must also advocate to ensure that our incarcerated clients receive appropriate medical and mental health care and are treated with dignity and respect while in the Broward County Jail.
Qualifications:
- Must be an active member and in good standing with The Florida Bar
- Must be willing to reside in or around the 17th Circuit within a reasonable time of accepting employment
- Good knowledge of criminal law and procedure
- Ability to make regularly scheduled court appearances; conduct case evaluation, investigation and preparation including but not limited to legal research, motion preparation, and related work as required.
- Good knowledge of judicial procedures and the Rules of Evidence
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with prosecutors, judges, and other professionals, as well as clients and the general public
- Ability to manage a high volume caseload while maintaining adequate levels of communication and attention to individual clients.
- Basic computer skills
