The State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida is responsible for the prosecution of all crimes committed in Orange and Osceola Counties. We are seeking an Assistant State Attorneys with a minimum of SEVEN (7) years of criminal law experience to serve as an Assistant State Attorney in our Homicide Unit. Prior experience as a prosecutor is preferred but is not required if the applicant has experience handling homicide cases as defense counsel. The candidate must have significant experience in conducting jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and handling expert testimonies. Applicant should be comfortable working closely with victim advocates, homicide survivors, and our law enforcement partners. Applicant will have a work record that reflects good judgment, a passion for justice and a commitment to the office’s mission of ensuring public safety through prosecution that is just, transparent, and fair to the people we serve.
Job Description:
The Homicide Unit handles all cases in which an individual is charged with various degrees of Murder and Manslaughter. These cases are complex and require a working knowledge of Florida statute, Florida rules of evidence and Florida Rules of Criminal Procedure. There is a great deal of interagency communication with various levels of law enforcement offices and will require a strong working relationship with their Homicide detectives.
Qualifications:
An interested applicant must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the Florida State Bar in good standing and have at least SEVEN (7) years of experience as a prosecutor or criminal defense attorney—with specific experience handling homicide cases.
Applicants should also have:
- Advanced diplomacy skills for managing law enforcement agency contacts and social skills for managing victim families
- Advanced trial skills
- Advanced case analysis abilities
- Advanced organizational practice and time management
- Familiarity with human pathology and medical record interpretation
- Familiarity with expert witnesses including but not limited to ballistics, DNA, Medical examiners,
- Willingness to go out to scenes and answer police phone calls
