The National Employment Law Project (NELP) seeks a dedicated professional to join our fundraising team in the position of Development Manager. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Development Manager will play a critical role in grant writing, deepen relationships with current foundation funders, and further NELP’s growth goals by identifying new potential prospects.

NELP has a team of 55 staff people based across offices in New York City, Washington D.C., and Berkeley, CA, with a 12-person Board of Directors, an annual budget of $20M, and hundreds of partners in the field with whom we work to further our mission.
What You Will Do
As a critical member of our Development team, the Development Manager will be responsible for programmatic and general operating grant writing – from proposal creation to narrative reporting. The Development Manager will conduct prospect research of foundations and other potential funding opportunities. Working closely with staff across the organization, the Development Manager plays an essential role in NELP’s fundraising and strategic growth.
You will specifically be responsible for the following:
- Generating well-researched, well-written, and well-documented grant proposals and reports.
- Working with the Chief Development Officer and Grants Manager to manage donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategy for grants.
- Liaising with NELP’s Program and Strategy staff to develop a solid understanding of the organization’s programs, initiatives, and history.
- Conducting prospect research to increase NELP’s pipeline by analyzing trends in institutional giving relevant to economic justice, workers’ rights, and racial justice.
- Developing funder meeting agendas and supporting funder relationship building.
- Working with Communications staff to identify stories with an ethical storytelling lens for funding proposals and external communications, including the annual impact report.
- Actively contribute to NELP becoming an anti-racist organization that reflects and embodies our values.

- You must be eligible and authorized to work in the United States.
Start Date, Location, Compensation and Benefits: In response to the pandemic, all staff are currently working remotely and are not traveling except in limited voluntary circumstances. When conditions are amenable, the position will require limited travel, primarily for NELP internal meetings or conferences. Candidates must be able to work from our New York City, Washington D.C., or Berkeley office. NELP currently offers voluntary access to all office locations. When NELP returns to working in the physical office, staff may choose to work remotely up to two days per week; this hybrid model seeks to leverage both the benefits of working with colleagues in person and the benefits of flexible remote arrangements. The remote start date will be as soon as possible.
This position is in NELP’s bargaining unit, represented by National Organization of Legal Service Workers, UAW Local 2320. Classification and compensation for NELP bargaining unit positions is commensurate with relevant experience and education and based on NELP’s collectively bargained scales. Based on our union scale, here are some examples of salaries for this position:
- with a relevant Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience, the salary will be $72,700;
- with a relevant Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of relevant experience, the salary will be $86,400;
- with a relevant Master’s degree and 11 years of post-graduate relevant experience, the salary will be $101,300.
Based on the union scale, if an individual candidate’s education or experience is higher than an example, the salary will be higher; conversely, with less education or experience, the salary is lower.
