Who We Are
The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley advances the rights of historically excluded individuals and families across Santa Clara County through legal services, strategic advocacy, and educational outreach. We serve over 10,000 individuals and families each year through our Housing Program, Children & Youth Program, and Health Program. Our attorneys, social workers, and advocates use legal advocacy as a tool for social change by crafting inventive solutions to the legal issues facing low-income people in our region.
With a staff of 90 employees, we are the largest provider of free legal services in the South Bay region of the Bay Area. Our work is collaborative and meaningful and includes plenty of opportunities for professional growth. As a staff, we actively engage in discussions about race, equity, and inclusion, and are actively working towards a Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)-centered legal services practice that incorporates community and movement lawyering.
What You’ll Do
The Community Education Advocate (CEA) will integrate community-driven advocacy and other race equity practices to the Education Law work of the Law Foundation’s Children and Youth team. This role will have significant influence in shaping the work of our Education Law practice. The CEA will screen potential clients requesting services from the Law Foundation to determine their eligibility. The CEA will also have significant contact with the community through outreach and connecting families with resources, including working closely with the Law Foundation Lead Attorney to guide the work of our medical-legal partnership with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. It will be important for the CEA to collect and maintain data that, in partnership with other members of the team, will be used to assess impact and improve programming.
- Interview clients to determine eligibility for services by telephone or in-person
- Gather information and data to verify eligibility for services, summarize prospective clients’ legal problems, and document requests for service
- Consult with attorneys, advocates, and medical staff regarding cases, and provide counsel and advice to clients with attorney supervision
- Provide clients with information and referrals to community resources
- File documents in court
- Attend community meetings, events, and outreaches that concern or impact clients
- Check in with supervisors, attorneys, and social workers regularly
- Prepare demographic data and other reports
- Assist with fundraising activities
Who You Are

- Understanding of legal concepts and materials

- Experience handling administrative tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to interact professionally with office staff and clients
- Desire to work independently and collaboratively
- Ability to be flexible, multi-task and take direction from multiple sources
- Experience working with individuals from multi-ethnic communities
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Access, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Bilingual capabilities (preferred)

Law Foundation is a hybrid workplace and staff will be required to commute to our San Jose offices 2+ days per week. As long as staff can meet the requirements above, including commuting at their own expense, staff may live anywhere in California. Due to logistical challenges regarding taxes, insurance, and time zones, we are not able to consider staff in other states at this time.
What We Offer
The annual salary range for this role is $50,499.31 to $76,917.03. All compensation is determined by the wage table of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between SEIU Local 521 and LFSV. Placement on the wage table will be based upon an applicant’s experience in comparable roles. Excellent benefits are provided including:
