Office of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel, Fifth District
Our Organization and Mission:
The five Regional Counsel offices were created by the legislature (Statute 27.511) in 2007 to provide legal representation to indigent persons in basically three classes of cases: 1) criminal conflict cases that the court grants the Public Defender’s motion to withdraw, 2) dependency and civil cases, and 3) certain statutorily authorized civil commitment proceedings. The Regional Counsel Offices geographic areas of responsibility were created to coincide with the boundaries of the five District Court of Appeals. The Regional Counsel Office, Fifth Region serves 4 judicial circuits and 13 counties. They are as follows: Fifth Circuit – Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion, Sumter; Seventh Circuit – Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns, Volusia; Ninth Circuit – Orange and Osceola; Eighteenth Circuit – Brevard, Seminole. Whether you work in one or all counties, you work for The Regional Counsel who is appointed by the governor.
As noted under Statute 27.511, the Florida Legislature states, “it is the intent of the Legislature to provide adequate representation in a fiscally sound manner, while safeguarding constitutional principles.”
The Work You Will Do:
Attorney Position – Criminal Defense in Ocala, Marion County
The Office of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel, 5th District, is seeking full time criminal defense attorneys in our Ocala, Marion County office. The criminal position involves handling full dockets of misdemeanors and felony cases, including juvenile court. The primary objective of the attorney is to litigate at a high level and provide the most effective and efficient representation possible to our indigent clients. The Attorney will be required to represent clients in various types of court hearings, to include jury trials, non-jury trials, motion practice, and any appellate filings which may be necessary, and should have the motivation and ability to cover cases on multiple dockets. Experience preferred, but not required. Must be a member in good standing with The Florida Bar. State of Florida benefits, including retirement and health insurance apply.
